Police in Old Kampala Division are investigating the killing of a 34-year-old boda-boda rider following a heated argument over football during celebrations marking Arsenal’s historic English Premier League triumph in Kampala.

The deceased, identified only as Denis, a boda-boda rider and resident of Bakuli in Kampala Central Division, reportedly lost his life on Sunday after what began as football banter turned into a deadly confrontation.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Rachael Kawala, Denis, said to be a passionate Arsenal supporter, got into a misunderstanding with a man identified only as Musiramu, who is reportedly a Manchester United fan.

The argument is said to have erupted as jubilant Arsenal fans poured onto the streets to celebrate their club’s long-awaited Premier League title victory, Arsenal’s first league crown in 22 years, ending what supporters have often described as a painful “title drought.” What started as the kind of football rivalry and banter common among fans quickly escalated into violence.

Police say the disagreement turned physical, with the suspect allegedly striking Denis on the head, causing him to collapse and die instantly. “Efforts to arrest the suspect are ongoing as inquiries into the death continue,” Kawala said, adding that the body was taken to Mulago Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

The incident happened against the backdrop of nationwide celebrations as Arsenal supporters marked what many described as a historic football moment. For Arsenal fans, it was the culmination of years of heartbreak, near misses, and rebuilding under manager Mikel Arteta, finally ending a wait that stretched back to the famous “Invincibles” era of 2003-04.

The 2025-26 title win sent Arsenal faithful into wild celebrations across Uganda, with fans clad in red jerseys flooding bars, video halls, streets, and city centres late into the night. Songs blared from speakers as supporters chanted club anthems, waved scarves and flags, and celebrated the end of a drought.

In some areas, fans reportedly slaughtered animals in jubilation, while in Kampala, Wakiso, Hoima, Jinja, and Mbale, celebrations spilled into roads, causing traffic disruptions as supporters took over major streets.

But football passion has, on several occasions, crossed into deadly territory. In 2023, a violent clash between Arsenal and Manchester City supporters in Kibira, Katwe, left  one Allan Kakumba, a local youth councilor, dead. Kakumba was reportedly killed while trying to intervene and rescue his brother, Titus Kyendo, during a fight involving neighbors Abigaba and Ssemakula, who had quarrelled over a match result.

A year later, in 2024, another football-related argument in a video hall at Kyobugombe Trading Centre in Kabale District also turned fatal when, during an Arsenal-Liverpool match, a Manchester United supporter Benjamin Okello celebrated an 81st-minute equaliser, provoking an Arsenal fan identified only as Onan. Police said Onan struck Okello with a stick, and Okello later died from his injuries at Rugarama Hospital.

As football celebrations continue to unite fans in moments of joy, police are once again warning supporters against allowing rivalry on the pitch to spill into violence off it.
