KAPCHORWA DISTRICT I URN: Police in Kapchorwa are investigating alleged suicide by a man by hanging following reported domestic allegedly misunderstandings with his spouse.
The deceased has been identified as Fred Kamutya, a resident of Tabagon Cell, West Division in Kapchorwa Municipality. He was found dead at his home on Wednesday evening 21st
According to the Sipi Regional Police spokesperson, Fredmark Chesang, preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased may have taken his own life after prolonged family disputes allegedly linked to denial of conjugal rights.
Chesang, however, said investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. “We have launched investigations to establish whether the deceased was killed and later hanged or whether he committed suicide himself,” Chesang said.
He added that police are recording statements from family members and community leaders to help establish the cause of the incident. The body was transferred to Kapchorwa Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examination.
Tafala Muyege, the LC1 Chairperson of Tabagon Cell, said the deceased had previously reported domestic disputes to local leaders last year, but the matter was resolved amicably through community mediation.
“We handled the family dispute late last year and everything appeared to have normalized. I am shocked that my resident chose to end his life. I hope it is not because the family issues persisted,” Muyege said.
Martin Arapaturo, the LC Three Councilor for Tongwo Ward, condemned the incident and urged families to seek counselling and peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms instead of resorting to violence or suicide. “Many men suffer in silence, which is not good,” Arapaturo said. “They should open up and seek guidance instead of resorting to suicide.”
Suicide cases are becoming common in the Sebei sub-region. In April this year, a Special Police Constable reportedly died by suicide under unclear circumstances.
