‎A 35-year-old man is on the run in Mityana district after allegedly strangling his estranged wife to death following a failed reconciliation attempt.‎‎‎

The deceased, identified as 23-year-old Sherina Namatovu a resident of Nakitolo Cell, Ttanda Ward in Ttamu Division, Mityana Municipality, was found dead in a cassava garden near a railway line on Sunday morning.‎‎‎

Lameck Kigozi the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson said that preliminary police findings indicate that Namatovu had separated from her husband, Dube Nsubuga of Kasozo Village in Zigoti Town Council, after domestic misunderstandings. The couple reportedly had one child together.‎

‎‎Kigozi adds that Nsubuga had repeatedly attempted to persuade the woman to return to their matrimonial home, in vain. He says that residents allege that Nsubuga had on several occasions threatened to harm her if she refused to reconcile with him.

‎‎On Saturday May 23rd 2026, Nsubuga met the deceased at an introduction ceremony held at the deceased’s village where he tried to urge her to return home. Kigozi explains that witnesses reported seeing the suspect seated with Namatovu during the function as he continued urging her to return home with him.

‎‎‎According to witnesses, the two left the ceremony together at around 12:35 a.m. and detectives believe that while on their way, the woman declined to accompany the suspect to his home, leading to a violent confrontation during which she was allegedly strangled to death.‎‎‎‎

Police officer from Mityana Central Police Station visited and documented the scene.

‎‎”Detectives observed abrasions around the deceased’s neck and noted that her tongue was protruding, indicating possible strangulation,” Kigozi said.

‎‎Kigozi said that Police also recovered the victim’s undergarment about five metres from the scene, while the body was found half-naked and dressed only in leggings. Visible signs of a struggle were reportedly observed at the scene.

‎‎Police has since recorded statements from witnesses, and the body was taken to Mityana Hospital for postmortem examination. ‎‎The suspect remains at large, but police has since launched manhunt to apprehend and have him prosecuted.

‎‎Domestic violence remains a growing concern across the country, posing a serious threat to lives, families, and communities.

‎‎In 2025, Police registered 208 murders linked to domestic violence nationwide. Of these victims, 92 were female, 89 were male, while 27 were juveniles. ‎‎According to the Police Crime Report, a total of 12,361 domestic violence cases were reported across the country in 2025, stressing the need for stronger prevention measures.
