KAMPALA I URN: At least five people were arrested in an intelligence-led operation that foiled a mobile money robbery in Wandegeya.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Rachel Kawala identified the suspects as Ivan Gizamba, Rogers Muyingo, Rashford Juma, Musa Masiga, and James Wanyama. They are currently detained at Wandegeya Police Station.
The arrests followed a tip-off on Friday evening about a group of suspected robbers targeting a victim at a mobile money agent in Wandegeya around 8 p.m. Police say the victim was expected to collect a bag of cash from Kalerwe and later deposit it with a bank agent in Wandegeya.
Preliminary police findings indicate the suspects planned to attack the victim during the transaction, but they were intercepted and arrested before it happened.
During the arrest, police also impounded two motorcycles with registration numbers UGG 664A and UMA 567JW, which the suspects were travelling on.
“Among those arrested is a key suspect believed to be connected to several aggravated robberies across the Kampala Metropolitan area, including robberies at Kitezi Hardware Shop in Wakiso District, Gwanda Mall, and Centenary Bank in the city center,” Kawala said.
Police said Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to apprehend other suspects linked to the crimes are underway.
Their arrest comes barely two months after armed, machete-wielding assailants on boda bodas robbed a female client in broad daylight outside the Centenary Bank branch on Nkrumah Road on 26 March. The gang, consisting of about 10 motorcycles, made off with a significant amount of money.
The robbery followed a similar incident on 20 February 2026, when a violent daylight robbery occurred at Gwanda Shopping Mall in Kisenyi, Kampala. A group of men armed with machetes attacked a businessman and robbed him of Shs 63 million.
The incident was captured on CCTV, leading to the arrest of three suspects and the impounding of three motorcycles used in the attack. However, police say other accomplices remain at large and are still being hunted.
