The Judiciary has commended the enactment of the Magistrates Courts (Amendment) Act, 2026, describing it as a major milestone in the implementation of the reform commitments made by the Chief Justice,  Dr. Flavian Zeija. The Act, which was assented to on  April 29th, 2026, and commenced on  May 8th, 2026,  amends the Magistrates Courts Act, Cap. 19, to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of Magistrates Courts, enhance the powers of magistrates to impose higher fines, abolish the position of Magistrate Grade II, provide for the designation of magisterial areas, and introduce transitional provisions for affected cases. HUNTER POLITICS I URN: The exiled Uganda Law Society President, Isaac Ssemakadde, has questioned the timing of alleged corruption and money laundering by the outgoing Speaker, Annet Anita Among. ARUA I URN: Arua Regional Referral Hospital is grappling with a huge staffing gap, with several critical positions remaining vacant, as well as inadequate infrastructure to accommodate staff and patients. Records obtained from the hospital administration show that the facility, which is supposed to have a total of 1,195 staff, is currently operating with only 276 employees, translating to just 24% staffing capacity, which is far below what is required to effectively manage the hospital. GULU CITY I URN: A 24-year-old shop attendant was shot dead by unknown armed men in an aggravated robbery in Awach Town Council, Gulu District. LIRA I URN: Construction of the 20,000-capacity Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City has taken shape, with major activities such as installation of seats, roofing, and painting almost finished. The facility, named after Uganda’s Olympic icon John Akii-Bua, is being built by SAMCO National Construction Company.
